It’s spring! Hooray! We all survived another winter season and are probably suffering a bit from cabin fever. No worries! We’ve got you covered. We’re here to help you keep your sanity by bringing these fun Twin Cities activities all together in one easy guide so you don’t miss a thing! This is month #5! May 4: Nature Play: Crazy Critters @ Wargo Nature Center | 10:00-11:15am Nature is full of crazy critters. Join the exploration to find the craziest critter. We’ll look at animal furs, find animal homes, do a craft, and read a story. This program is for 2-5 year olds who are accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration is required.
May 4-7: Festival of Nations | Various Times In 2017, the Festival will continue its legacy as the longest running multicultural festival in the Midwest and, once again, collaborate with nearly 100 ethnic groups to create a truly unique experience – one that celebrates cultural heritage and provides our community’s immigrants with a platform to express their stories through world-class performances, exhibits, ethnic cuisine, and personal connections.
May 6-7: Oliver Kelley Farm Grand Opening | 10am-5pm Celebrate the official grand opening of the Kelley Farm’s newest facilities, including the beautiful new visitor center, Learning Kitchen, outdoor exhibits, animal barn, modern gardens and cropland and more. Watch guest chef demos, plant a seed cup and make your own vinaigrette to take home, play 19th century games, enjoy live music and food, and more farm-sized fun.
May 6: Cinco de Mayo | 9am-6pm We invite you to come early and stay all day at our Cinco de Mayo Festival. We have plenty to do for the whole family. For a full schedule of events, click here and be sure to check out the following activity areas!
May 6: Kids’ Fishing Clinic | 9am-12pm Bring the family and learn how to fish, be safe near the water, cast, identify fish and enjoy a free lunch. All participants and chaperones will receive a hot dog and chips lunch. Kids will also receive a goody bag of fishing related gear. All equipment is provided. No pre-registration required. FREE.
May 7: The 43rd Annual MayDay Parade and Festival | Noon For many in Minnesota, the MayDay Parade is a time to celebrate the coming warmth with hand-built puppets and masks (some over 10 feet tall), music, and performance in the street. But the essence of the parade is rooted in the local community and contemporary issues, concerns, and visions for a better world.
May 8: PreK Mondays at The Works Museum | 9am-12pm The first Monday of month is PreK Monday at The Works Museum! From 9 am – 12 pm, kids admission is half-priced. Each month there will be special activities for your Preschool child.
May 9: Ballet Tuesdays at the Landmark Center | 12pm Join the Saint Paul Ballet as they perform excerpts from the company repertoire! Feel free to bring a bag lunch or purchase one from Anita’s Café to enjoy during this lunchtime favorite. FREE.
May 11: Pint of Music @ Bauhaus Brew Labs | 7:30pm Join Minnesota Orchestra musicians at Bauhaus Brew Labs for a free Pint of Music micro-concert. Formerly known as Symphony and Suds, this program brings Minnesota orchestra musicians to your favorite local breweries and your favorite local brews to Orchestra Hall.
May 11-14: Mom! The Musical @ Ames Center | Varies Mom! is back by popular demand, just in time for Mother’s Day! This musical celebrates the twists and turns, delights and dilemmas, and rewards and regrets of parenting. From trying to reason with a toddler having a tantrum to panicking at the prospect of a parent-teacher conference, this musical celebrates the humor and the terror of parenting.
May 13: Mother’s Day Tea | 1:30-3:00pm Families with kids ages 5 and up are invited to a special Mother’s Day Tea at the Scott County Historical Society. Enjoy tea and treats in the historic 1908 Stans House, learn about proper tea etiquette, and make a special Victorian trinket box to take home or give to mom! $10/child, $15/adult. Must register by Thursday, May 11.
May 13: Celebrating Moms | 11am-3pm Twin Cities Premium Outlets invites moms to celebrate Mother’s Day by enjoying a day that focuses on fashion and fun. Lots of FREEBIES for moms at this event!
May 13: Model Railroad Show and Sale | 9am-3pm The Museum hosts a semi-annual Model Railroad Show and Hobby Sale at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. Operating layouts in several scales! Over 200 tables of new and used scale models; Toy Trains, Antiques, Collectibles, Tools, Books, Videos, Toys, Buildings, Magazines, Prints, Posters, Photos and more! $6, kids 7 and under are free.
May 14: Hmong American Day Celebration |2-5pm Hmong American Day honors the contributions of the Hmong people to America and celebrates the history, culture and achievements they have made. This event was created in 2013 to remember the day that General Vang Pao, along with 2,500 Hmong soldiers and families, were evacuated from Laos and made the United States—and Minnesota—home. Activities include a welcome program, music, dance, games, art activities, a meet-and-greet with Hmong businesses and organizations and the “We Are Hmong Minnesota” pop-up exhibit.
May 14: St. Paul Civic Symphony Mother’s Day Concert | 1pm This is a public’s perennial favorite and you want to come early for the best seats. The Saint Paul Civic Symphony will put out their best efforts for please moms everywhere. Bring your mother in for a special performance and a way to say thanks for being Mom! May 18: Taste of Lakeville | 5-9pm Lakeville Rotary club presents its annual Taste of Lakeville. Enjoy food and drink galore with local restaurants, wine and beer vendors, caterers, and more. Silent auction and live auction. The great Lakeville get-together!
May 19-21: Art-A-Whirl | Various Times Presented by the Northeast Minneapolis Arts Association, Art-A-Whirl is an open studio tour in Northeast Minneapolis. It’s a great opportunity to tour private artist studios and galleries, connect with the artists, and purchase original artwork. Over the last 20 years, it has become the largest open studio tour in the country. FREE.
May 20: Child Safety Fair | 9am-Noon Join University of Minnesota Health Maple Grove Clinics and Maple Grove Hospital for a fun morning devoted to staying safe and healthy while being active. We’ll have a lot of experts from the community joining us to create a fun and informative event for families. FREE.
May 20: Daisy Dash 5k Walk/Run | 10am Come join us as we celebrate Pregnancy and Postpartum Support Minnesota’s third Daisy Dash! Events for kids and adults alike. Strollers and baby carriers welcome. All proceeds will will go to PPSM, and continue with their mission to support new and expectant parents struggling with perinatal mood or anxiety disorders, loss, birth trauma, and anything else that comes along with having babies!
May 20: Pan Asian Arts Festival @ Mall of America | Noon-8pm This unique event is a celebration of many Asian cultures and heritage including Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Hmong, Indonesian, Indian, Vietnamese, and other Asian cultures. Audiences will get to enjoy over 100 performances, Arts and Crafts, and food from the Asian regions and multimedia arts entertainment, including various Asian collections from most Asian countries and performances from other professional artists.
May 22: EcoArts Fest | 11am-2pm This is a one-day outdoor arts, environmental, and cultural celebration at the Minnesota National Wildlife Refuge. This free, family friendly, zero waste event celebrates and honors our ties to one another and to Mother Earth. The festival engages kids and adults with fun activities that shed light on environmental issues through art making and show ways individuals can create change. FREE.
May 27: Peer into the Pond Family @ Maplewood Nature Center | 2-3:15pm Catch, identify and release snails, water bugs and minnows from our 600 foot floating boardwalk. May 27-29: Memorial Day Weekend @ Fort Snelling | 10am-5pm Gather friends and family for a visit to Historic Fort Snelling this Memorial Day Weekend. Explore the historic buildings, visit with costumed interpreters, and learn about life in early Minnesota. Watch cannon and musket firings, hearth cooking, learn about American Indian history, and join in historic games on the parade ground. Kids can try out the History Hunt scavenger hunt and earn a Fort Kids button.
May 20: Bloom: An Event for New and Expectant Moms (SOLD OUT) | 10am-1pm We are thrilled to be bringing this fantastic event back to the Twin Cities for a third year! BLOOM is an event for new and expecting moms that you’re going to love. A huge thank you to Breck School for hosting this event and Park Nicollet Health Services and HealthPartners for sponsoring! We are excited to be partnering with City Moms Blog Network and 50 of our other sister sites to bring local communities this event with an estimated attendance of over 4,000+ moms across the US! This event is geared towards moms who are currently expecting a baby, had a baby within the last year, foster moms of infants, or are planning on growing their family soon through birth or adoption. Kangaroo Crossing @ MN Zoo May-September | Regular Hours The Minnesota Zoo is bringing the “Land Down Under” up north this summer with an immersive walkabout experience along the Northern Trail. It will leave you feeling like you were just hiking in Australia, as you explore the multi-species habitat and see these animals up close. You literally walk through the exhibit with these outback ambassadors!
Alexander and the Bad Day May 5-21 | Varies For every kid who has begged “read it just one more time!” after reaching the last page of this beloved story, here’s a musical adaptation that will offer up a favorite anti-hero in an marvelous new way. And for those who have not yet met the beleaguered Alexander, beset by the worst set of troubles a kid could ever find crammed into one day, get ready to enjoy some sympathetic chuckles and more than a few outright belly laughs during this lively production.
Music in the Mall @ MOA January -November | Select Dates and Times Mall of America® has an exciting opportunity for school and community groups to perform and share their talents with Mall guests through the MOA Music in the Mall. This series runs January through mid-November and is available on select days each month.
Toddler Tuesdays at MOA Tuesdays | 10am-Noon Toddler Tuesdays is a program that provides events, free entertainment and discounts especially for toddlers. Events include special character appearances, arts and crafts, story time and much more! FREE.
Wee Wednesdays at Midtown Global Market Wednesdays | 10:30am-1pm Wee Wednesdays showcase free educational programming, fun crafts and great meal deals each Wednesday morning at Midtown Global Market! Kids at the Castle: Third Friday Playdates (American Swedish Institute) In the hour before the museum opens, join ASI for visual play, storytelling, music, movement and crafts inspired by ASI’s current exhibits- activities that will encourage creative minds and active hands. Recommended for ages 2-5. $5 per family. Registration not required; check in at the Information Desk by 11 a.m. on the day of the program. Adult accompaniment required.
