A Twin Cities Mom’s Guide to the Month of April 2017

It’s spring! Hooray! We all survived another winter season and are probably suffering a bit from cabin fever. No worries! We’ve got you covered. We’re here to help you keep your sanity by bringing these fun Twin Cities activities all together in one easy guide so you don’t miss a thing! This is month #4! We’ll update with new additions as they come.

March 31-April 2: Spring Festival: An Arts and Crafts Affair | Varies Enjoy shopping handcrafted wares for unique home décor, gifts personalized right at the shows, holiday furnishings or special treasures for yourself or a loved one, while making a personal connection meeting & visiting with the actual artist. Our artists and crafters thrive on producing something new and different each year and love to talk to customers about their creative inspirations, processes and skills. 

April 1: Nature’s April Fool’s @ Eastman Nature Center | 1-3pm Search for what doesn’t belong along an un-natural trail. Create a camouflaged critter and meet one of nature’s tricksters.

April 1: Minnesota Craft Beer Festival | 1:30-5pm With more than 220 beers from 80+ breweries from Minnesota and beyond, we’re committed to providing a taproom experience for attendees. Each brewery has been asked to bring a taproom-only beer and/or a rare limited-release option. The event will be held at the Minneapolis Convention Center Hall E. All proceeds will be donated to Twin Cities Habitat For Humanity.

April 1: A Scottish Ramble @ Landmark Center | 11am-5pm Children and adults alike can celebrate everything Scottish at this largest indoor Scottish Festival in the Midwest! Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for kids and seniors.

April 2: Free Family Fun Day @ Richardson Nature Center | 3-4pm Explore forest play fort building through hands-on activities at your own pace.

April 8: Robot Day @ The Works Museum | 9am-4pm Every April, The Works Museum participates in National Robotics Week  with a special day of robotics fun for kids and families. Our presenter partners demonstrate kid-friendly robotics concepts and real-world applications that inspire and amaze. Kids and families interact with robots of all shapes and sizes, and meet real engineers as well as students who build, program and compete with their robots.

April 9: Urban Expedition: Togo @ Landmark Center | 1-3pm Landmark Center’s popular Urban Expedition program, which provides families with an opportunity to learn about the world right here in Saint Paul’s backyard, returns for the 13th year.  The five individual programs provide authentic cultural experiences that include music, dance, crafts and traditions from different destination countries. FREE. 

April 9: Free Family Fun Days: Turtles @ Lowry Nature Center | 12:30-1:30pm Explore through hands-on activities at your own pace.

April 9: Free Family Fun Days: Welcoming Waterfowl @ Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park | 1-3pm Explore through hands-on activities at your own pace.

April 9: Free Family Fun Days: Minnesota Mammals @ Richardson Nature Center | 3-4pm Explore through hands-on activities at your own pace.

April 15: Easter at the Castle @ ASI | 9-10:30am Bring the family and celebrate Easter at the American Swedish Institute by taking part in the Twin Cities’ only Easter egg hunt in a castle!  Kids will have fun hunting high and low for colorful eggs hidden throughout the nooks and crannies of the 33-room Turnblad Mansion. 

April 20-23: Celebration 2017 @ Paisley Park | Varies CELEBRATION 2017 will honor and celebrate the life and legacy of Prince, as the world marks the first anniversary of his passing. Bringing together musicians, creative personnel, special guests and friends who worked closest with Prince and knew him best, these four days will feature live music, panel discussions and presentations on Prince’s tremendous talent, influence and importance as a composer, musician, producer, live performer and filmmaker.

April 22: Youth Archaeology Workshop | 1-3pm During this workshop, participants will explore basic field methods in archaeology, including surface survey and shovel testing (two ways archaeologists dig for artifacts!). For ages 11-16.

April 22: Family Earth Day Celebration @ Wargo Nature Center | 12:30-3pm Join us at Wargo Nature Center for a FREE fun-filled family Earth Day celebration complete with a climbing wall and light refreshments. Learn about Wargo’s unique offerings and activities, make your own earth art project to take home, listen to live music, explore the trails, and enjoy the lovely spring weather! Also be sure to visit the Earth Day Fair, where local organizations will provide information and businesses will showcase earth-friendly products. FREE.

April 22-23: Party for the Planet @ Como Zoo | 10am-4pm Hey party animals, it’s cool to conserve! Earth Day is April 22, and we’re throwing our annual “Party for the Planet,” in partnership with Xcel Energy. Bring the family for a fun weekend of activities, crafts and education programs that explore animals, plants and people that depend on this big blue ball. You’ll leave with some great ideas for reducing your own impact on the planet, and improving our natural habitats.

April 23: Free Family Fun Days: Digital Scavenger Hunt @ Richardson Nature Center | 3-4pm Explore through hands-on activities at your own pace.

April 28-30: Saint Paul Art Crawl | Varies Recognized for its tremendous success, the Saint Paul Art Crawl has become a model arts event that is emulated in cities across the country.  To the artists and residents of Saint Paul, the event means much more.  The Art Crawl has evolved from a fun weekend art event to a framework for creating and fostering important, interdependent relationships between the arts community and the city of St. Paul.

April 29: May Day Kids Kraft @ Scott County Historical Society | 10:30-11:15am For ages 2-8. Happy spring! We’re celebrating May Day at the SCHS with stories and a special May Day basket craft! FREE.

April 30: Free Family Fun Days: Amazing Amphibians @ Richardson Nature Center | 3-4pm Explore through hands-on activities at your own pace.

April 30: Luffarslöjd for Youth @ ASI | 1-3pm Dive into Swedish luffarslöjd (decorative metal work)! Bend, cut, wrap, and pinch colorful metal wire to make your own unique design! 

April 8: Crepes with the Easter Bunny (SOLD OUT) | 2-5:30pm Our first ever spring family event takes place this month at The Wishing Tree Play Cafe sponsored by Metropolitan Pediatric Dental Associates; Crepes with the Easter Bunny! Our attendees will an afternoon of delicious crepes, meeting the Easter Bunny, crafts and play. This is just one of many family events we’re planning this year – stay tuned for more and keep an eye on Instagram to see how fun these events are.

May 20: Bloom: An Event for New and Expectant Moms | 10am-1pm We are thrilled to be bringing this fantastic event back to the Twin Cities for a third year! BLOOM is an event for new and expecting moms that you’re going to love. A huge thank you to Breck School for hosting this event and Park Nicollet Health Services and HealthPartners for sponsoring! We are excited to be partnering with City Moms Blog Network and 50 of our other sister sites to bring local communities this event with an estimated attendance of over 4,000+ moms across the US! This event is geared towards moms who are currently expecting a baby, had a baby within the last year, foster moms of infants, or are planning on growing their family soon through birth or adoption. Whether it’s your first baby or third, you are sure to have a morning of fun at this event! This event will provide a morning of pampering, educational resources, giveaways and swag, food and drinks, shopping and connecting moms and families with relevant local resources. Tickets will go on sale on Thursday, April 20 at 8:30pm sharp! Minnesota Zoo Farm Babies March 24-April 30 | Gather the whole family and celebrate spring at the Wells Fargo Family Farm, March 24 – April 30. Say hello to our adorable farm babies, including goats, chicks, piglets, lambs, calves and bunnies. All the cute happens daily, with special family activities each weekend.

Toddler Tuesdays at MOA Tuesdays | 10am-Noon Toddler Tuesdays is a program that provides events, free entertainment and discounts especially for toddlers. Events include special character appearances, arts and crafts, story time and much more! FREE.

Wee Wednesdays at Midtown Global Market Wednesdays | 10:30am-1pm Wee Wednesdays showcase free educational programming, fun crafts and great meal deals each Wednesday morning at Midtown Global Market!
 Dance with them, experience live puppet theater, learn to cook fun items together in the kitchen, and even pet live animals from the Como Zoo. FREE.

Kids at the Castle: Third Friday Playdates (American Swedish Institute) In the hour before the museum opens, join ASI for visual play, storytelling, music, movement and crafts inspired by ASI’s current exhibits- activities that will encourage creative minds and active hands. Recommended for ages 2-5. $5 per family. Registration not required; check in at the Information Desk by 11 a.m. on the day of the program. Adult accompaniment required.
