A Twin Cities Mom’s Guide to the Month of June 2017

It’s summer in Minnesota! We made it to another season of sunshine, lakes, and lots of fun! We’re here to help you make the most of these summer months in the Twin Cities by bringing you all the fun and activities in one easy guide so you don’t miss a thing! This is month #6! We’ll update with new additions as they come.

June 2-4: Edina Art Fair | Varies The Edina Art Fair has grown to 200,000 visitors throughout the 3-day weekend, while displaying 300 artists diverse collection of art, entertainment, kids zone, craft beer garden in the Edina 5-0 Food Court, and a new beer garden on Drew Avenue. The Edina Art Fair is the first art fair of the summer and is rated one of the top 50 art festivals in the nation. The fair is held annually in the streets of 50th & France. 50th & France is the pre-eminent shopping destination in the Twin Cities; known for its luxury and lifestyle boutiques! This unique neighborhood has a reputation for bringing a lifestyle that caters to distinction – a distinction its members take pride in. FREE.

June 3: WaterFest @ Lake Phalen | 11am-4pm A free family festival with hands-on activities on and around Lake Phalen. Boating, fishing, water games, live animals, arts & crafts, exhibits. FREE.

June 3: Explore Your Parks Day in Washington County | All Day No permit required in all Washington County Parks! Enjoy lots of different activities happening at different parks, including a story stroll. FREE.

June 3: St. Anthony Park Arts Festival | 10am-5pm The Saint Anthony Park Arts Festival brings together artists, musicians, art lovers, families and a supportive community. Set in a charming neighborhood of St. Paul, the arts festival is a one day celebration of both art and a historic Carnegie branch library. Now in its 48th year, the festival continues to attract high quality artists from across the region.

June 3-4: Animal Farm Weekend @ Oliver Kelley Farm | 10am-5pm Farm animals have always been and continue to be an important part of agriculture. Meet the animals and their offspring. Watch the farmers as they shear off the sheep’s wool coats. Discover how farm animals were used and cared for in the 19th century, then meet modern animals and explore garden crops. Explore animal products cooked in the historic farm kitchen and in the new Learning Kitchen in the visitor center.

June 3-4: Flint Hills International Children’s Festival | Varies Join the Ordway for the 2017 Flint Hills International Children’s Festival. Plan a day of excitement with your friends and family, featuring the best international performing artists from around the globe!

June 3-9: I Love Burnsville Week | Varies Every June Burnsville hosts a week-long celebration of everything that makes our community a great place to live, work, and play! Hundreds of people turn out to participate in events, meet their neighbors and have lots of food and fun. Every year brings new and exciting activities as well as perennial favorites. Many events are FREE.

June 4: Grand Old Day – St. Paul | 8am-6pm Whether you’re looking for the best summer parade in Minnesota (complete with candy, of course!), Minnesota outdoor music festivals, some of the best fair foods Minnesota has to offer, or just some good old family fun in the sun – St. Paul’s Grand Old Day is the place to go! The 2-1/2 Miles of Grand Avenue is divided into 4 unique “Districts” which will have something for all ages and interests.

June 3-9: I Love Burnsville Week | Varies Every June Burnsville hosts a week-long celebration of everything that makes our community a great place to live, work, and play! June 8-11: Spring Lake Park Tower Days | Varies There’s so much fun to be had at Tower Days–face painting, carnival games, giant slide, obstacle course, food, a parade and more!

June 10: National Get Outdoors Day @Powderhorn Park | 11am-3pm Get Outdoors Day is a nationwide celebration that provides opportunities for people to get outdoors and try new activities. Hosted in collaboration between the Minneapolis Park and Rec Board, the National Park Service, REI, the Minnesota DNR, the Forest Service and others, this year’s Get Outdoors Day will be full of free and fun activities to try! FREE.

June 10: Craft Cider Festival | 12-4pm The MN Craft Cider Festival is the only cider festival in the state that’s devoted to cider, and cider only. Come to the festival to taste your favorite ciders and try ciders you’ve never seen before. Participating cideries will be added daily.

June 10: Northern Spark 2017 Along the Green Line | 8:59pm-5:26am Northern Spark is a free all-night art festival exploring the effects of climate change through participatory projects happening in neighborhoods along Metro Transit’s Green Line. From sunset on June 10 to sunrise on June 11, Northern Spark will illuminate and draw audiences to neighborhoods and public spaces all along the METRO Green Line, connecting Minneapolis and Saint Paul.  Experience the largest Northern Spark yet, with nearly 70 art projects organized around neighborhood nodes. FREE. 

June 10-11: Chalkfest at Arbor Lakes | 10am-5pm Chalkfest at Arbor Lakes, presented by Minneapolis Northwest Tourism, is a free, 2-day street art festival with entertainment, food, and family fun! The Chalkfest at Arbor Lakes is featuring sidewalk chalk art by professionals, amateurs & art enthusiasts from across the world! 

June 10-11: Little Mekong Night Market | Varies Little Mekong Night Market is the Twin Cities’ unique street market festival located in the heart of the Little Mekong District. Inspired by the night markets in Southeast Asia, the mission of our Night Market is to offer unique products, services, and arts & crafts for an exciting community experience.  From free cultural performances and engaging activities to enticing new foods and art, there is a lot to do, see, and sample at the Night Market for all ages.

June 11: Parade of Boats @ Centennial Lakes | 11am-4pm Come and see over 100 radio controlled electric, steam, and wind powered models. Club members on hand to display, run, and answer all your questions about model boats. Special guest Captain Jack Sparrow will be there too. FREE.

June 11: Take a Kid Fishing @ Thompson County Park | 11am-4pm We’ll be at Thompson County Park to assist fishing programming with Dakota County Parks and Recreation, the Minnesota Department of Resources and other great partners. Participants that are age 16 or older don’t need fishing licenses on this day provided they are accompanied by youth and children age 15 or younger. Fishing poles, tackle, and bait are provided, plus there will be lots of other activities to participate in as well. Learn more about fishing and try your hand at catching the lake’s fishy inhabitants! FREE.

June 15: Adult Night Out @ MN Zoo | 6-9pm Our new series of events for grown-ups provides guests with the opportunity to explore the Zoo after hours!  $10 admission fee (free for members); food and beverage available for purchase.  Online reservations will go live closer to the event dates.

June 15-July4: White Bear Lakes Manitou Days | Varies Come to beautiful White Bear Lake to celebrate Manitou Days, a three-week summer festival showcasing some of the greatest things about this lakeside community. 

June 15-18: Cottage Grove Strawberry Festival | Various Times The Cottage Grove Strawberry Fest is a four-day, family focused event that offers something for everyone. An estimated 15,000 to 20,000 people will enjoy wonderful food, fantastic bands, a carnival and much, much more! FREE. 

June 16: Friends and Family Fun Day @ Dakota City Heritage Village | 10am-12:30pm This summer, bring your kids, grandkids and friends to visit the past and experience life at the turn of the last century on our Family & Friends Fun Day, offered one Friday in June and one in July. Stroll through the museum and see horse-drawn buggies and farm machinery from the good ol’ days.

June 16-18: Stone Arch Bridge Festival | Varies A weekend of art & music on the Minneapolis Riverfront with 250 artists, 3 performance stages, family art activities, and more!

June 17: Minnesota Children’s Museum Block Party | 9am-4pm Enjoy free activities and entertainment on West Seventh Street in front of the museum.

June 17: Midsommar Celebration at the American Swedish Institute | 10am-5pm So join the all-day festivities at ASI’s Midsommar Celebration when the season explodes into life at our annual, outdoor festival offering something fun for every age, from kids to grandparents. As in Sweden, families gather to make flower head wreaths, dance around the Midsommar pole and, singing lively traditional Swedish songs.

June 17: MN Parent’s 4th Annual Kid Fest | 10am-1pm Events will include live children’s music, activities, face painting and more! FREE.

June 17: Riverfront Quest Family Walking Tour | 10:30am-Noon Explore the Minneapolis riverfront with a family treasure hunt. Make a quest journal from 10:30-11 am and then solve rhyming riddles, search for hidden boxes and discover the stories of Minneapolis’ history along the way from 11 am to noon. The tour is designed for ages 6-11.

June 22-26: Rosefest | Varies Rosefest celebrates the community traditions of health and wellness, arts and entertainment, fun and fresh air for people of all ages. There are Rosefest events for everyone, including the annual Rose Parade on the 26th. 

June 22-24: Twin Cities Jazz Festival | Various Times The Twin Cities Jazz Festival is a free family-friendly event attracting over 30,000 people to the vibrant, joyful sounds of jazz. Festival events are held in and around beautiful Mears Park in the heart of downtown Saint Paul’s historic Lowertown neighborhood. FREE.

June 22-24: Oakdale Summerfest | Various Times Oakdale Summerfest is an annual event that happens during the month of June. Each year there is a carnival, vendors, and free concerts. Come and enjoy a relaxing festival with us.

June 22-24: Earle Brown Days Festival | Various Times From a petting zoo to kids’ crafts to inflatables, face painting, magic show and fireworks, there is so much to do and see at this event!

June 23-25: Blaine Festival | Various Times The Blaine Festival is an annual community celebration with weekend-long events for the whole family. Join us at Aquatore Park (corner of Hwys. 65 & 10) showcasing a wide variety of entertainment with something for everyone.

June 24: Food Truck Extravaganza in Stillwater | 11am-6pm Food Truck Extravaganza will include over 20 food trucks, a market place, music, a business area and kid’s activities. This family-friendly event will be a great place to pop in on a Saturday, grab some food, shop a bit and learn more about our local businesses.

June 24-25: Stillwater Flea and Crafters Market | 9am-3pm Make a day of it in the beautiful St. Croix River Valley and check out over 100 unique vendors, local crafters, food trucks, music and more! A great day of fun for the whole family. FREE to the public!

June 24-25: Wayzata Art Experience | Various Times Come to this family friendly art fair with food and great music in downtown Wayzata! Perfect for the whole family. 

June 24-25: Afton Strawberry Festival | Various Times This unique community festival honors the long, rich heritage of Strawberry crops grown in the area since the 1800’s. Great food, live music and fun activities for the entire family in Afton Town Square Park. FREE.

June 24-25: Eagan Art Festival | Various Times The Eagan Art Festival is a two-day show featuring fine art and original handmade crafts by over 100 artisans. Visitors will also enjoy music performances, children’s activities and a variety of tasty foods.

June 25: Uptown Food Truck Festival | 11am-9pm One of the Twin Cities most popular & delicious free events – The Uptown Food Truck Festival– invade Lake & Hennepin on Sunday, June 26th. FREE.

June 25: Svenskarnas Dag | 9am-5pm Svenskarnas Dag is one of the biggest Swedish festivals in the United States. Svenskarnas Dag is held on the fourth Sunday in June at Minnehaha Park in Minneapolis, MN. The day includes many activities such as: a morning church service, the raising of the Midsommar Pole, various singing and dancing performances by local and visiting Scandinavian groups, and the crowning of the Midsommar Queen. Authentic Swedish foods and handicrafts will be available for purchase.

We are thrilled to announce the details of our 2nd Annual Family Fun Day Event, presented by Minnehaha Academy and The Urgency Room! Join us on Saturday, August 5 for a morning of family fun. We will have lots of activities for kids geared towards 2-8 years old, but all children are welcome! Inflatables, face painting, crafts and more! Story Time Trolley in Stillwater: June 3- October 28 |  This event for families includes a short ride on the trolley with an author or storyteller! Your $5 registration includes a token to board the trolley, a discount for 20% off a children’s book the day of the event and a snack after your ride.

Kangaroo Crossing @ MN Zoo May-September | Regular Hours The Minnesota Zoo is bringing the “Land Down Under” up north this summer with an immersive walkabout experience along the Northern Trail. It will leave you feeling like you were just hiking in Australia, as you explore the multi-species habitat and see these animals up close. You literally walk through the exhibit with these outback ambassadors!

Music in the Mall @ MOA January -November | Select Dates and Times Mall of America® has an exciting opportunity for school and community groups to perform and share their talents with Mall guests through the MOA Music in the Mall. This series runs January through mid-November and is available on select days each month.

Toddler Tuesdays at MOA Tuesdays | 10am-Noon Toddler Tuesdays is a program that provides events, free entertainment and discounts especially for toddlers. Events include special character appearances, arts and crafts, story time and much more! FREE.

Wee Wednesdays at Midtown Global Market Wednesdays | 10:30am-1pm Wee Wednesdays showcase free educational programming, fun crafts and great meal deals each Wednesday morning at Midtown Global Market!
 Dance with them, experience live puppet theater, learn to cook fun items together in the kitchen, and even pet live animals from the Como Zoo. FREE.

Kids at the Castle: Third Friday Playdates (American Swedish Institute) In the hour before the museum opens, join ASI for visual play, storytelling, music, movement and crafts inspired by ASI’s current exhibits- activities that will encourage creative minds and active hands. Recommended for ages 2-5. $5 per family. Registration not required; check in at the Information Desk by 11 a.m. on the day of the program. Adult accompaniment required.
