There’s always something to do in the Twin Cities, and we’re here to help you keep your sanity by avoiding Google and bringing these activities all together in one easy guide. In 2016, we’ll be bringing you monthly event guides so you don’t miss a thing! This is month #5, again with no shortage of activities and an entire list of the activities going on in our Neighborhood Groups! We’ll update with new additions as they come.


May 1: Family Concert: Music, Noise & Silence | 2-3pm We all know that Music reigns at Orchestra Hall…but what happens when three meddlesome characters—Music, Noise and Silence—barge in and cause a ruckus? Only with the help of the audience, and Music, will the conductor be able to bring harmony back to the Orchestra. Recommended for ages 6+.

May 1: The 42nd Annual MayDay Parade and Festival | Noon For many in Minnesota, the MayDay Parade is a time to celebrate the coming warmth with hand-built puppets and masks (some over 10 feet tall), music, and performance in the street. But the essence of the parade is rooted in the local community and contemporary issues, concerns, and visions for a better world.

May 1: Stars on Ice | 4pm Six medalists at the 2016 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships, including the Men’s, Ladies and Ice Dance champions, will join the 2016 Stars on Ice tour.

May 2: PreK Mondays at The Works Museum | 9am-12pm The first Monday of month is PreK Monday at The Works Museum! From 9 am – 12 pm kids admission is half-priced. Each month there will be special activities for your Preschool child.

May 6-8: Festival of Nations | Various Times In 2016, the Festival will continue its legacy as the longest running multicultural festival in the Midwest and, once again, collaborate with nearly 100 ethnic groups to create a truly unique experience – one that celebrates cultural heritage and provides our community’s immigrants with a platform to express their stories through world-class performances, exhibits, ethnic cuisine, and personal connections.

May 6-8: Cinderella 1944: A Love Story | Various Times Set in England during WWII, Cinderella 1944 is an original story inspired by the classic tale told through dance and music,and features an original musical compilation and all-new stage designs, sets, lighting, costumes and choreography that includes swing dance in addition to classical ballet.

May 7-8: Macy’s Mother Day Celebration at the MN Zoo | Normal Hours Moms get in free both Saturday and Sunday, May 7 and 8. Bring your mom to meet some other special animal moms! FREE.

May 7: Kids’ Fishing Clinic | 9am-12pm Bring the family and learn how to fish, be safe near the water, cast, identify fish and enjoy a free lunch. All participants and chaperones will receive a hot dog and chips lunch. Kids will also receive a goody bag of fishing related gear. All equipment is provided. No pre-registration required. FREE.

May 7: Model Railroad Show and Sale | 9am-3pm The Museum hosts a semi-annual Model Railroad Show and Hobby Sale at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. Operating layouts in several scales! Over 200 tables of new and used scale models; Toy Trains, Antiques, Collectibles, Tools, Books, Videos, Toys, Buildings, Magazines, Prints, Posters, Photos and more! $6, kids 7 and under are free.

May 7: Celebrating Moms | 11am-3pm Twin Cities Premium Outlets invites moms to celebrate Mother’s Day by enjoying a day that focuses on fashion and fun. Lots of FREEBIES for moms at this event!

May 7: Cinco de Mayo | 9am-6pm We invite you to come early and stay all day at our Cinco de Mayo Festival. We have plenty to do for the whole family. For a full schedule of events, click here and be sure to check out the following activity areas!

May 8: St. Paul Civic Symphony Mother’s Day Concert | 1pm This is a public’s perennial favorite and you want to come early for the best seats. The Saint Paul Civic Symphony will put out their best efforts for please moms everywhere. Bring your mother in for a special performance and a way to say thanks for being Mom! For more information call 651-292-1239. FREE.

May 10: Ballet Tuesdays at the Landmark Center | 12pm Join the Saint Paul Ballet as they perform excerpts from the company repertoire! Feel free to bring a bag lunch or purchase one from Anita’s Café to enjoy during this lunchtime favorite. FREE.

May 14: Minneapolis/St. Paul Mini Maker Faire | 10am-6pm The 2016 Minnesota/St. Paul Mini Maker Faire is a fun, family-friendly, locally organized event to celebrate creativity, technology, and enterprise. The festival will include hands-on exhibits and maker demonstrations, amazing children’s build and play area, soldering workshops, coding workshops, interactive sculptures, presentations, live music and performances.

May 14: Pan Asian Arts Festival | 11am-8pm This unique event is a celebration of many Asian cultures and heritage including Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Hmong, Indonesian, Indian, Vietnamese, and other Asian cultures. Audiences will get to enjoy over 100 performances, Arts and Crafts, and food from the Asian regions and multimedia arts entertainment, including various Asian collections from most Asian countries and performances from other professional artists.

May 14: EcoArts Fest | 10am-3pm This is a one-day outdoor arts, environmental, and cultural celebration at Harriet Island in St. Paul. This free, family friendly, zero waste event celebrates and honors our ties to one another and to Mother Earth. The festival engages kids and adults with fun activities that shed light on environmental issues through art making and show ways individuals can create change. FREE.

May 20-22: Art-A-Whirl | Various Times Presented by the Northeast Minneapolis Arts Association, Art-A-Whirl is an open studio tour in Northeast Minneapolis. It’s a great opportunity to tour private artist studios and galleries, connect with the artists, and purchase original artwork. Over the last 20 years, it has become the largest open studio tour in the country. FREE.

May 21-22: Cirque de la Symphonie | Various Times On stage, our world-class musicians creating the perfect soundscape, while all around them (and flying over their heads!) the internationally acclaimed artists—aerialists, acrobats, contortionists, jugglers and strongmen of Cirque de la Symphonie— make the most astounding feats look easy. Recommended for ages 8+.

May 21: Rock the Cradle Pop Up | 9am-8pm Dance with DJ’s at a special disco party and to live music, as The Current brings their popular Rock the Cradle event to the museum. This new pop-up version of the beloved annual event, presented with Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota, will feature all the family friendly and fun activities the museum offers with additional Rock the Cradle programming. The Rock the Cradle Pop-Up is perfect for kids 2-8 years old.

May 21: Daisy Dash 5k Walk/Run | 11am Come join us as we celebrate Pregnancy and Postpartum Support Minnesota’s third Daisy Dash! Events for kids and adults alike. Strollers and baby carriers welcome. All proceeds will will go to PPSM, and continue with their mission to support new and expectant parents struggling with perinatal mood or anxiety disorders, loss, birth trauma, and anything else that comes along with having babies!

May 25: Crayola Experience Opening | Mall Hours It’s the only place in the world where the magic of Crayola comes to life. Here, you’re always encouraged to let your creativity run free, to color outside the lines and to play, explore, and learn. This one-of-a-kind attraction is where color, chemistry, and technology magically combine to create a colorful adventure for a child’s imagination.

May 28: Memorial Day Weekend @ Fort Snelling | 10am-5pm Gather friends and family for a visit to Historic Fort Snelling this Memorial Day Weekend. Explore the historic buildings, visit with costumed interpreters, and learn about life in early Minnesota. Watch cannon and musket firings, hearth cooking, learn about American Indian history, and join in historic games on the parade ground. Kids can try out the History Hunt scavenger hunt and earn a Fort Kids button.

May 28: Guided Morning Bird Hikes | 8:30-9:30am Learn to identify the birds that call the St. Croix Valley home and contribute to citizen science data collection. For all ages; children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

May 28: Family Canoeing | 1pm-3pm Learn safety, entering and exiting a canoe, and paddle strokes while having fun on the water. Children 17 years and younger must be accompanied by a registered adult. Reservations required by two days prior. Recommended for ages 5+.


Ongoing Activities in May:

Dinosaurs @ MN Zoo: May 28-September 5 This summer, bring your family to the Minnesota Zoo, where amazing lives and dinosaurs roam! See life-like Stegosaurus, Brachiosaurus, Allosaurus and more. You can even snap a selfie with a T. rex. The Zoo is the only place your family can experience dinosaurs and some of their living friends who survived extinction.

Farm Babies at Gale Woods Farm: April 2 – August 27 | The arrival of spring at Gale Woods Farm means the arrival of other exciting things – farm babies! From piglets, chicks and lambs in April to a calf in June, see which animals might be there to greet you at an exciting event on the farm. See schedule for dates and times.

Three Rivers Park District: FREE Family Fun Days: Sundays | Various Times Three Rivers offers family fun at Kroening Interpretive Center or Richardson Nature Center. Discover all the fun that life in and around the river and woods has to offer. FREE.

Toddler Tuesdays at MOA Tuesdays | 10am-Noon Toddler Tuesdays is a program that provides events, free entertainment and discounts especially for toddlers. Events include special character appearances, arts and crafts, story time and much more! FREE.

Como Zoo Lil’ Explorer Thursdays Thursdays | 10am-Noon Perfect for the 1-3 year old to meet animal and plant visitors, see story time, play games and many other fun activities. Different theme each week! FREE.

Wee Wednesdays at Midtown Global Market Wednesdays | 10:30am-1pm Wee Wednesdays showcase free educational programming, fun crafts and great meal deals each Wednesday morning at Midtown Global Market!
 Dance with them, experience live puppet theater, learn to cook fun items together in the kitchen, and even pet live animals from the Como Zoo. FREE.

Kids at the Castle: Third Friday Playdates (American Swedish Institute) In the hour before the museum opens, join ASI for visual play, storytelling, music, movement and crafts inspired by ASI’s current exhibits- activities that will encourage creative minds and active hands. Recommended for ages 2-5. $5 per family. Registration not required; check in at the Information Desk by 11 a.m. on the day of the program. Adult accompaniment required.

Beauty and the Beast at Chanhassen Dinner Theater: March 4 – September 3 | Various Times The classic story brought to life at the Chanhassen Dinner Theater! Only ages 5 and up are admitted.

I Love You, Stinky Face April 15-May 15 This heart-warming new musical will have you hugging your loved ones a little tighter and laughing with glee as the imaginative child snuggles onto our main stage this spring! Before drifting off to dream land, the ever-inventive child has a few outrageous questions, but the devoted mother replies to each and every one with wit and love. Come follow this delightful tale through the heart of imagination!

Number the Stars April 29-May 22 Annemarie Johansen and Ellen Rosen play carefree games in the streets of 1943 Copenhagen, until the Nazi occupation of their city becomes increasingly more perilous. Experience Annemarie’s dangerous mission to save her best friend’s life as her courage, faith, ingenuity and even fledgling acting skills are all tested in this engaging production. 

What’s Up Doc? The Animation Art of Chuck Jones April 30-August 14 Explore the creative genius behind Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and the hapless but optimistic Elmer Fudd. How did Chuck Jones and his collaborators create cinematic magic? Original sketches, storyboards, cels, photographs, wall-projected animated films and more tell the story of this amazing animation.
