Our winters are long and the coveted days of spring, summer and fall are still sprinkled with rainy days.  In order to survive the ups and downs of our weather with the kids, we’ve compiled a list of the best indoor play areas in the Twin Cities.  From mall play areas to indoor playgrounds, from indoor water parks to museums, you’re sure to find something to keep you busy on rainy days and all throughout the winter.

Eden Prairie Center Play Area | Monday–Saturday 10am-9pm; Sunday 11am–6pm  The children’s play area is located on the lower level of the Kohl’s wing.  Children fewer than 42 inches tall are welcome to enjoy the play area. Socks are required for play.

Legoland Mall of America | Monday-Saturday 10am-9:30pm; Sunday 11am-7pm  A great spot to stop and sit at the Mall of America.  Your kids will love the huge Lego displays and the play area has benches for parents, and both Duplo and regular Lego tables for the kids.

Maplewood Mall Play Area | Monday-Saturday 10am-6pm; Sunday 11am-6pm  Located near Kohl’s, the play area includes a reading area with a kid sized couch, is located next to the food court and provides a large changing area with wipes.

Minneapolis Institute of Arts (Minneapolis) | Mondays – Closed; Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday-Sunday 10am-5pm, Thursdays 10am-9pm  A great spot to hit up with your kids for an out of the box activity.  Don’t assume they’re too young to explore art – there’s plenty to look at for kids of all ages!
Admission is Free daily.

Minnesota Children’s Museum (St. Paul) | *PLEASE NOTE: The St. Paul museum will temporarily close Dec. 5 to complete the final phase of renovation. Grand reopening is in April 2017. You can still enjoy the temporary location at Mall of America through the winter!* We are fortunate to have such a fun children’s museum – with a great rotating exhibits, plus the standards including the giant Ant Hill, the city bus, water play and more, plus the tot area on the 4th floor is a safe place for babies to play.
Admission for all ages is $9.95. 

Minnesota History Center (St. Paul) | Mondays – closed; Tuesday 10am-8 pm; Wednesday-Saturday 10am-5pm; Sunday Noon-5pm.  This is a great spot to hit with your kids.  See our post detailing highlights of this museum here.
Admission: Varies – see website for details. Free Tuesdays 5-8pm; Free for children ages 5 and under.

Minnesota Zoo (Apple Valley) | Hours vary throughout the year.   A great spot to hit year round, the Tropics trail feels a bit like a vacation, the Minnesota trails gives a glimpse of our natural wildlife and the fish and sharks in Discovery Bay offer touch pools and more.  The grizzly bears on the Russian Coast are worth the short walk outside on our mild winter days. If you plan to go more than once during the year, the membership is well worth the price.
Admission: Ages 0-2, Free. Ages 3-12, $12.  Ages 13-64, $18.

Science Museum of Minnesota (St. Paul) | Mondays – Closed; Sunday, Tuesday & Wednesday 9:30am-5pm; Thursday-Saturday 9:30am-9pm  Plenty of hands on exibits, the Omnitheater and more, your kids will have plenty to keep busy, and don’t forget to walk up and down (and up and down…) the musical stairs before you leave!
Admission for children ages 4-12 is $10 & for adults is $13.

Tots Playtime Bowling (Pinstripes – Edina): Weekdays | 10am-Noon  Kids bowl for $5 and parents bowl for Free! Cozy couches, wait staff is available if you need some coffee or a snack and bumpers and ball ramps abound.  Limit 4 children per adult.

Created to Grow (St. Anthony): Open Studio Play and Play Space A bring your children to work with you art space! All the provisions you need to create your work. A gallery space to sell work at a very low consignment rate.
$15/class – packages available.

Sky Zone Trampoline Park (Plymouth) | Hours: Monday CLOSED, Tuesday-Thursday 4:00-8:00pm. Friday 11:00am-10:00pm, Saturday 10;00am-11:00pm, Sunday 11:00am-7:00pm. Open Jump hours vary. This is an awesome place to burn some energy! This indoor space full of trampolines is great for all ages. From Toddler Time (0-5 years) to Mega Jump (15+ years), your whole family can find something to enjoy. They also have a Glow Jump for all ages and offer fitness classes for adults. Admission varies based on which program you want to enjoy and how long you want to play.

Sovereign Grounds Coffee Shop and Playroom (Minneapolis): It’s a place to relax, meet other parents, talk, have a great cup of coffee or tea and maybe pick up some fresh beans to take home. There are comfortable spots for adults and a large playroom for the kids. Sovereign Grounds is proud to be the first kid-friendly coffeehouse in town, implementing the unique concept of combining an indoor playground with a traditional, community-oriented neighborhood café. Kids of all ages are not just tolerated here. They are welcome!

Vertical Endeavors (Minneapolis) | Hours: Monday-Friday 8:00am-11:00pm, Saturday 10:00am-11:00pm, Sunday 10:00am-6:00pm Children and adults of all ages can find something to enjoy here! With multiple rock walls that are for all different ability levels, you can have a fun day here with your entire family. They offer indoor climbing classes, guided climbing adventures, birthday parties, and more! Equipment is available for rental. Admission for a daily pass is $18 or you can get a 10 punch card for $135. Memberships also available.
