A Twin Cities Moms’ Guide to the Month of November 2016

There’s always something to do in the Twin Cities, and the fall months are no different! We’re here to help you keep your sanity by bringing these activities all together in one easy guide. In 2016, we’ve been providing you monthly event guides so you don’t miss a thing! This is month #11, and it’s a little more quiet with Thanksgiving this month! We’ll update with new additions as they come.

November 5: Oakdale Discovery Center Art Fair | 10am-5pm Discover the perfect piece of original artwork for the home, office, or gift-giving at the Oakdale Art Discovery Fair!

November 5: Build a Birdfeeder @ Maplewood Nature Center | 10am-12pm Build a birdfeeder with reclaimed cedar fencing and learn which Minnesota native winter birds will visit your feeder. Explore stations to learn about different beak types and more. Your backyard birdfeeder will be a joy to you and birds throughout the chilly season! $5/birdfeeder

November 5: Eagan Pumpkin Recycling Event | 9am-12pm What do you do with your pumpkin after Halloween?….Recycle it of course! Stop by the drive through drop off site at the Eagan Community Center and recycle your pumpkins and receive a free treat. 

November 10: Ladies Night Out in Stillwater | 5-9pm Start at one of our unique boutiques and then shop and dine your way around town to the finale party where you’ll have a chance to win prizes.

November 12: Global Chili Cook-Off @ Midtown Global Market | 12-2pm Midtown Global Market will host the 10th annual Global Chili Cook-Off. Similar to the Market’s other popular cook-offs, guests will have the chance to sample 12 chili recipes crafted by the Chefs of the Midtown Global Market restaurants. Guests will then vote for their favorite to decide the 2016 Global Chili Cook-Off Champion.

November 13: St. Martin’s Day @ Landmark Center | 4-6pm Activities include lantern making, music, dance performances and a lantern parade through Rice Park, led by St. Martin on horseback. FREE.

November 13: Twin Cities Royal Princess Ball | 3-5:30pm Dream Parties of Woodbury is bringing to you a one-of-a-kind event with stage performances, an etiquette lesson, singing, dancing, stories, craft tables, picture opportunities and more for an afternoon of magical entertainment. We also will have a few special Superhero guests! 

November 17: Smash to the Max | 7am-7pm Spare Key is teaming up with The Break Room and Anchor Paper Co. to create an interactive event that allows donors and participants to break, destroy and smash objects in exchange for a donation to Spare Key! We’re calling it: Smash to the Max! GiveMN.org hosts Give to the Max Day every November to help raise awareness to all the charities and foundations throughout Minnesota.

November 18: Drive In{side}: FindingDory | 5-7:30pm Bring the kids to the Maplewood Mall for a special drive-in treat. We will be located on the upper level in between Sears and Dairy Queen. Come early to be sure you have enough time to take a pit stop for some popcorn and beverages. The first 200 kids to arrive will receive a coupon for a FREE kids size popcorn and juice box.

November 18-20: Victorian Christmas in Stillwater | Varies Built in 1870, the Washington County Historic Courthouse is the oldest standing courthouse in Minnesota. The Victorian Christmas event was established to raise funds for preserving this historic monument, which now serves as a premier destination for history programming and public/private special events. Cheers! 

November 22-23: The Hip Hop Nutcracker | 7:30pm A holiday mash-up for the entire family, The Hip Hop Nutcracker, a contemporary re-imagination of Tchaikovsky’s timeless music, sets out on its second national tour following the success of last year’s sold-out inaugural tour across the United States and Russia.

November 23: Burnsville Winter Lighting Ceremony | 6pm-6:45pm Residents and visitors are invited to attend the ceremony and stroll through the lights. The ceremony will include a special appearance by Mr. and Mrs. Claus as well as entertainment by the Burnsville High School Freestyle Singers and the Sioux Trail Elementary Choir.

November 25-27: The Stillwater Nutcracker | Varies The Stillwater Nutcracker is a family-friendly version, choreographed to the music of Tchaikovsky, and follows the traditional storyline of the young girl named Clara and her Christmas dream. Our version includes a live narration and the exuberant dancing of children from the age of five through professional level dancers who grace the show with beauty and spirit. Performed by the dancers of Stillwater’s own, St. Croix Ballet. 

November 25-27: Excelsior Christkindlsmarkt | 10am-4pm The Excelsior Christkindlsmarkt is a three-day Christmas festival held annually in Excelsior, Minnesota. It is a celebration of the holiday season filled with activities for the whole family. Come for the Grande Parade, open-air market featuring German Christmas traditions, delicious treats, shop for traditional gifts and unique treasures and visit with friends at the beer garden. The KinderWorld is all for the kids – a Sugar Plum Fairy-themed center for puppet shows, music, story telling, and activities. 

November 26-27: Disney-Pixar Rataouille in Concert | 2pm You’ll eat up this tasty treat about an ambitious French rat (Remy) who dreams of becoming a gourmet chef in this Disney-Pixar animated film with live music from the Minnesota Orchestra! 

Orphan Train: November 19- December 18 | Over 100,000 orphaned children were shipped by rail from the slums of New York City to farm families in the Midwest between 1858 and 1929. Orphan Train brings to life the struggles and joys of the children who landed in Minnesota and the families who took them in.

Holidazzle: November 25-December 23 | The Minneapolis Downtown Council and Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board are excited to partner together and bring Holidazzle to Loring Park. As downtown Minneapolis’ premier holiday celebration, Holidazzle has delighted residents, visitors and downtown employees for years. Now, in 2016, this tradition is bringing family-friendly programming to Loring Park and is free and open to the public. You and yours are invited to join in the festivities!

The Elves and the Shoemaker: November 29-December 28 | A whimsical tale about a troupe of elves who help restore a poor cobbler to prosperity by making a pair of the most fantastic and magical shoes ever seen. This heart-warming adaptation tells of midnight enchantment and of virtue and generosity rewarded. It’s the perfect holiday story and is a great way to introduce children of all ages to the magic and fun of theater.

Cinderella: November 8-January 8 | Hold on to your pumpkins! The magical, fantastical, and all-too-hilarious Cinderella returns to our stage for the holiday season. Freshly updated with all new songs, gags, and mayhem, you’ll jeer at the deliciously dysfunctional stepmother and sisters as much as you’ll cheer for Cinderella in her quest to attend the magnificent ball and fulfill her destiny. Put on your glass slippers, and join us for this spectacular and outrageous telling of our unique Cinderella, guaranteed to delight. 

Night Trains at Twin City Model Railroad Museum: November 5-February 25 | Night Trains Season comes to museum layouts in a magical way, the lights are turned down, the buildings and street lights glow warmly, setting the scene for specially lighted models of vintage passenger trains. The make believe town of Matlin is buried in a blizzard, and throughout the Museum the layouts are adorned with miniature Christmas lights and decorations.

“Gridiron Glory: The Best of the Pro Football Hall of Fame” Exhibit: September 24-January 15 | Organized by the Pro Football Hall of Fame, this exhibit features more than 200 artifacts, photos and rare documents, footage from the NFL Film archives, and interactive experiences. A section of the exhibit will be devoted to the Minnesota Vikings Training Camp, where visitors can work on their vertical leap, broad jump, kicking and passing games.

Three Rivers Park District: FREE Family Fun Days: Sundays | Various Times Three Rivers offers family fun at Kroening Interpretive Center or Richardson Nature Center. Discover all the fun that life in and around the river and woods has to offer. FREE.

Toddler Tuesdays at MOA Tuesdays | 10am-Noon Toddler Tuesdays is a program that provides events, free entertainment and discounts especially for toddlers. Events include special character appearances, arts and crafts, story time and much more! FREE.

Wee Wednesdays at Midtown Global Market Wednesdays | 10:30am-1pm Wee Wednesdays showcase free educational programming, fun crafts and great meal deals each Wednesday morning at Midtown Global Market!
 Dance with them, experience live puppet theater, learn to cook fun items together in the kitchen, and even pet live animals from the Como Zoo. FREE.

Kids at the Castle: Third Friday Playdates (American Swedish Institute) In the hour before the museum opens, join ASI for visual play, storytelling, music, movement and crafts inspired by ASI’s current exhibits- activities that will encourage creative minds and active hands. Recommended for ages 2-5. $5 per family. Registration not required; check in at the Information Desk by 11 a.m. on the day of the program. Adult accompaniment required.
