There’s always something to do in the Twin Cities, and the fall months are no different! We’re here to help you keep your sanity by bringing these activities all together in one easy guide. In 2016, we’ve been providing you monthly event guides so you don’t miss a thing! This is month #9, and it’s packed with things to do! We’ll update with new additions as they come.
Thru September 5: Minnesota State Fair | 6am-Midnight Also known as the Great Minnesota Get-Together, the Minnesota State Fair features 12 days of food on a stick, agricultural exhibits, parades, entertainment, rides, animals and more.
September 3-5: Threshing Weekend at Oliver Kelley Farm | Varies Threshing the grain harvest was the culmination of an entire growing season’s toil. Join the Kelley farmhands as they bring grain bundles in from the fields, thresh the grain in an 1856 horse-powered Cox and Roberts threshing machine, help bag up the grain and rake away the straw.
September 3-5: Green Giant Corn Feast | 11am-7pm Guests can treat themselves to over 30,000 lbs of FREE corn on the cob from Green Giant (while supplies last). Bring the entire family and eat as much corn as you want, all weekend long! The Green Giant Corn Feast is included with your Valleyfair admission.
September 5-11: Burnsville Fire Muster| Varies Features wine and beer tasting, entertainment, fireworks, carnival rides, kids activities, local restaurants, emergency personnel demonstrations, and of course, the fire truck parade that started it all.
September 8-11: Happy Days Festival | Varies The Ramsey Happy Days Festival hosts a large array of family friendly activities and events during the day. When the sun goes down, live music and an impressive fireworks show takeover. Most events are free thanks to the contributions of our generous sponsors.
September 9-11: Inver Grove Heights Days | Varies Annual four day city wide celebration. Featuring a parade, coronation, fireworks and more! This annual event is run by volunteers from the community and area businesses.
September 9-11: James J. Hill Days | Varies A fun festival in Wayzata featuring a parade, carnival, live music, food, and more!
September 10: Washington County Bluegrass Festival | 2-6pm The annual Washington County Bluegrass Festival fuses community, the great outdoors and homegrown bluegrass music. It’s their way of celebrating a successful summer season and giving thanks to everyone for supporting Washington County Parks.
September 10: Fiesta Latina | 11am-4:30pm CLUES (Comunidades Latinas Unidas en Servicio), the largest Latino-led nonprofit in Minnesota, is kicking off Hispanic Heritage Month with the 2016 “Fiesta Latina” – a free outdoor celebration of family, community and Latino culture.
September 10: Food on 4 Wheels: Food Truck Festival | 3-8pm 23+ food trucks are rolling into Eagan for a day of food, sweet treats, music, beer, wine and festival fun.
September 10: Taste of White Bear Lake | 2-5pm Enjoy a fall afternoon in the beautiful Pine Tree Apple Orchard while sampling some of the finest foods and spirits in the White Bear Lake area while helping raise fund for Rotary projects.
September 10: Nordic Music Festival | 10am-5pm Musicians and dancers dressed in colorful costumes will liven the event that is free for all to attend. Delicious food and beer too!
September 10-11: Grape Stomp Festival | Varies Come enjoy a traditional grape stomp at St. Croix Vineyard or enjoy a free tour or live music. And, of course, wine!
September 10-11: Edina Fall into the Arts Festival | Varies Each year, more than 250 artists, food vendors, sponsors, and art enthusiasts celebrate the last days of summer as we move into fall.
September 10-11: Anniversary Weekend at Afton Apple | 10am-6pm Features pick your own apples and fall raspberries, magician, hayrides, playground, straw mountain, retread hill, Johnny Combine, petting farm, jump pad, etc.
September 11: St. Paul Classic Bike Tour | 7:15am The Saint Paul Classic is a showcase for the handsome parks and parkways of Saint Paul. The 22nd annual Saint Paul Classic Bike Tour will take place on Sunday, September 11, 2016. Don’t miss this family-friendly Saint Paul tradition!
September 11: Grandparents Day @ MN Zoo | Normal Hours Grandparents receive free Zoo admission! Bring the grandchildren and enjoy your day at the Zoo.
September 13: Spider Safari with Larry Weber | 4-8:30pm Larry Weber will teach us about intriguing creatures including the shamrock orb weaver, zebra jumping spider, and fishing spiders in the wetland. Ages 9+.
September 16-18: Septemberfest | Varies Visit Eagan’s SeptemberFest’s Rock with the Flock concert featuring Arch Allies and Hairball! Great music, drink specials and food truck court! Tickets on sale after Labor Day!
September 16-18: St. Paul Oktoberfest | Varies Eat the wurst, drink the best, and enjoy the centuries-old German tradition with bed races, polka, and, of course, beer and games! Cast your vote for your favorite Oktoberfest beer made by a local craft brewer in the Kaiser’s Choice Award. Admission is FREE!
September 16-17: Ramble Jam Country Music Festival | Varies Ramble Jam is produced by the Rotary Club of Farmington as their annual fundraiser to support both local and international service projects. Features great music, food and drinks.
September 17-18: Lakeville Art Festival | 10am-5pm Considered to be one of the finest art festivals south of the river, the Lakeville Art Festival is held the third weekend in September in historic downtown Lakeville, Minnesota on the grounds of the Lakeville Area Arts Center. Featuring over 70 artists on the park-like grounds allow the unique use of a circular type arrangement of artist booths, providing an intimate and accessible setting.
September 17: Girl Time: Discover. Dream. Do. | 9am-4pm Explore engineering together at Girl Time, a special day for girls and their families to learn about engineering from real women engineers. Explore hands-on activities and demonstrations and have the opportunity to talk with women working in engineering and girls studying STEM fields.
September 17: ArtReach Art Fair | 10am-7pm Browse among local artisans, enjoy live music, food and family activities. Tour TB Walker’s personal collection of religious art housed at Hennepin. Admission is FREE.
September 17: Excelsior Apple Day | 9am-10pm Apple Day is a lakeside festival featuring locally produced foods, art, antiques, crafts and a good-old-fashioned street dance in historic downtown Excelsior. There will also be The Excelsior Real Estate Happy Apple Kids’ Corner for the whole family to enjoy!
September 17: Golden Valley Arts and Music Festival | 9:30am Gather with friends and family while enjoying food, beer, wine, live music and dancing, featured work of local artists, games and interactive arts for the whole family.
September 16-18: Payne Arcade Harvest Festival 2016 | Varies Payne/ Arcade Harvest Festival is and East Side Celebrations! And is one of St Paul’s oldest festivals. It’s a neighborhood celebrations put on by everyone in the area and promoted by PABA and the East Side Lions Club.
September 17: Wild Rice Festival | 10am-4pm A celebration of wild rice, the Minnesota fall season and Native American culture! Highlights include children’s games and activities, hands-on apple cider pressing, Native American dance,drums and story-telling, traditional wild rice harvesting demonstrations, wild rice sausage, wild rice soup, fry bread and other tasty treats, and much more! FREE.
September 22-24: Junk Bonanza| Varies An indoor, juried vintage market for purveyors and shoppers of vintage finds, antiques, architectural salavage, artisan-repurposed and upcycled goods! All artfully arrayed for a best-of shopping experience!
September 24-25: Prairie Sugar Weekend @ Kelley Farm | Varies Join the Kelley farmhands as they make prairie sugar, also known as sorghum molasses. Help strip the leaves off the sorghum canes, press the canes through a horse-powered press to extract the juice and stir the juice as it boils down to make a sweet, syrupy molasses. Then, enjoy a sweet treat of molasses confections such as gingerbread and molasses candy.
September 24: Northern Grape Stomp | 11am-7pm Join Northern Vineyards Winery in a Celebration of our harvest. Come down and enjoy a traditional grape stomp on the banks of the St. Croix river! Bring a picnic relax with a glass or bottle of wine on our deck while enjoying live music. Ages 21+.
September 24-25: Afton Art in the Park | 10am-5pm The 38th Annual two day outdoor fine arts and traditional craft fair takes place in Afton’s quaint, Town Square Park and features over 90 vendors showcasing fine arts, pottery, woodwork, jewelry, photography, sculpture, fiber and more. Plus great food, 2 days of live music, and a kids art pavilion.
September 24: Gridiron Glory Family Day | Noon-4pm Join the Minnesota Vikings cheerleaders and SKOL Line for a pep rally and parade to open the exhibit “Gridiron Glory: The Best of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.” The family day program includes hands-on football fun with skill clinics, a Vikings fan selfie-station, art activities, button-making, face painting, music and appearances by Vikings alumni players.
September 24: St. Paul Food Truck Festival | 11am-9pm One of the Twin Cities most popular & delicious free events – The St. Paul Food Truck Festival – will invade Mears Park on Saturday September 24th.
September 25-25: Lone Oak Days Fall Festival | 11am-4pm Experience a nostalgic look back to 1940’s era farm life in Eagan at the Lone Oak Days Fall Festival at Holz Farm Park.
September 25: Medieval Days @ Caponi Art Park | 11am-4pm Authentic pavilions will be on display in a medieval village as artisans in period dress present educational demonstrations and interactive activities. Look forward to armored combat, coin making, music, jugglers, cooking, glass beads and other arts and skills. You can also try your hand at firing a crossbow or send a ball flying with a trebuchet.
September 25: Czech and Slovak Festival | 11am-5pm Live music, folk dancers, vendors, children’s games, ethnic food, Czech beer,info booths, silent auction. FREE Admission.
September 30-October 1: Lake Minnetonka Block Party | Varies To support Team USA, welcome area visitors and fans with a good old-fashioned Minnesota street festival with bands, food and fun in Lumpy’s Lounge.
September 30: Roseville’s Craft Beer and Wine Fest | Varies Pour for Parks! Help raise money for local parks by sampling some the best local beers and wines and enjoying delicious bites from local food trucks.
Aamodts Apple Farm Fall Fun: September 1 – October 31 | Aamodt’s Apple Farm Peak Fall Season Activities may include hay wagon rides, honeycrisp express kids train, hay bale maze, apple picking, apple goods shop in apple barn, and John Deere tractor trikes. Varies based on harvest season.
Minnesota State Fair: August 25 – September 5 | Also known as the Great Minnesota Get-Together, the Minnesota State Fair features 12 days of food on a stick, agricultural exhibits, parades, entertainment, rides, animals and more.
Renaissance Festival: August 20 – October 2 | 9am-7pm The Minnesota Renaissance Festival is celebrating its 46th Season!
Come and be a part of this long-standing tradition by visiting the festival grounds in Shakopee.
Story Time Trolley in Stillwater: June 4 – October 29 | This event for families includes a short ride on the trolley with an author or storyteller! Your $5 registration includes a token to board the trolley, a discount for 20% off a children’s book the day of the event and a snack after your ride.
Mummies: New Secrets from the Tombs: Through September 5 | Get a rare, up-close look at nearly 20 mummies from ancient Peru and Egypt in this stunning new exhibition, developed by the world-renowned Field Museum of Chicago. Featuring one of the largest collections of mummies in North America, Mummies: New Secrets from the Tombs lets you see how modern technology has revealed intricate details about the lives and customs of these ancient people. Saint Paul is one of only four cities on this exclusive tour. Don’t miss it!
Dinosaurs @ MN Zoo: May 28-September 5 | This summer, bring your family to the Minnesota Zoo, where amazing lives and dinosaurs roam! See life-like Stegosaurus, Brachiosaurus, Allosaurus and more. You can even snap a selfie with a T. rex. The Zoo is the only place your family can experience dinosaurs and some of their living friends who survived extinction.
“Gridiron Glory: The Best of the Pro Football Hall of Fame” Exhibit: September 24-January 15 | Organized by the Pro Football Hall of Fame, this exhibit features more than 200 artifacts, photos and rare documents, footage from the NFL Film archives, and interactive experiences. A section of the exhibit will be devoted to the Minnesota Vikings Training Camp, where visitors can work on their vertical leap, broad jump, kicking and passing games.
Three Rivers Park District: FREE Family Fun Days: Sundays | Various Times Three Rivers offers family fun at Kroening Interpretive Center or Richardson Nature Center. Discover all the fun that life in and around the river and woods has to offer. FREE.
Toddler Tuesdays at MOA Tuesdays | 10am-Noon Toddler Tuesdays is a program that provides events, free entertainment and discounts especially for toddlers. Events include special character appearances, arts and crafts, story time and much more! FREE.
Wee Wednesdays at Midtown Global Market Wednesdays | 10:30am-1pm Wee Wednesdays showcase free educational programming, fun crafts and great meal deals each Wednesday morning at Midtown Global Market! Dance with them, experience live puppet theater, learn to cook fun items together in the kitchen, and even pet live animals from the Como Zoo. FREE.
Kids at the Castle: Third Friday Playdates (American Swedish Institute) In the hour before the museum opens, join ASI for visual play, storytelling, music, movement and crafts inspired by ASI’s current exhibits- activities that will encourage creative minds and active hands. Recommended for ages 2-5. $5 per family. Registration not required; check in at the Information Desk by 11 a.m. on the day of the program. Adult accompaniment required.
Beauty and the Beast at Chanhassen Dinner Theater: March 4 – September 3 | Various Times The classic story brought to life at the Chanhassen Dinner Theater! Only ages 5 and up are admitted.
