‘Tis the Season to Volunteer: Resources for the Whole Family

We are right in the middle of the holiday season. The season is likely filled with holiday movies, baking cookies, figuring out where to move your mischievous Elf, trips to see Santa, shopping for the perfect present and lots of Christmas music. You probably have a whole list of family traditions to carry on this year centered around food, gifts, and time with friends and family.

But you know what else?

It’s also the season to give, spread kindness, and compassion.

I think many of us have been thinking lately that we need to give back to our community. We want to raise kind and grateful kids that understand their privileges. Kids that understand that life isn’t all candy canes and gingerbread cookies. I want my son and daughter to have a big heart for others. No. A big heart for everyone. So, this year I’m going to be adding a new holiday tradition with our family. A tradition to help us spread love and think about others.

If you’d like to help spread compassion this holiday season, I’ve put together a list of resources below. This is just a starting point because as you can imagine, there are hundreds of organizations where we can help.

Doing Good Together
This organization provides tools to families and organizations to help them raise compassionate, engaged children. They have a monthly list of volunteer opportunities for the whole family, and right now the list has a perfect combination of holiday fun and giving. For example, bake cookies in your own home and then drop them off on Nicollet Ave for The Aliveness Project.

Safe Families
Safe Families for children gives your family an opportunity to serve the community right in your own home. Safe Families is a network of host families who have been screened and trained to host kids whose parents are in crisis. Through this award-winning program, parents struggling with addiction, homelessness, joblessness, and heath crises can have peace of mind that their children are protected and nurtured while they get clean, sober, working and back on their feet. The mission of the organization is to support and preserve biological families so that they can better care for their children. The ultimate goal is to prevent abuse and neglect that can occur in the setting of crisis, strengthen families, and reduce the number of children entering the foster care system.
