A Twin Cities Mom’s Guide to Month of March 2017

There’s always something to do in the Twin Cities, and the winter months are no different! We’re here to help you keep your sanity by bringing these activities all together in one easy guide. In 2017, we’re bringing you our monthly event guides so you don’t miss a thing! This is month #3! We’ll update with new additions as they come.

March 1-5: Disney on Ice: Dream Big | Varies Enter a world where adventure is awaiting and courage leads the way at Disney On Ice presents Dream Big. High-flying jumps, daring acrobatics, breathtaking skating and lovable Disney friends make this an experience your family will never forget. Believing is just the beginning when Disney On Ice presents Dream Big skates into your hometown!

March 3: Nature Bingo @ Lebanon Hills Regional Park | 7-8:30pm Join us for family fun on the first Friday of every month with park activities and s’mores. Play bingo with a twist during our family friendly game. All ages. FREE.

March 3: Chaska Community Center Carnival | 5:30-7:30pm You are invited to a special free carnival! The Chaska Community Center is kicking off the new spring season! You can play all your favorite carnival games, eat a snack, and jump in the inflatable jumper. All ages welcome. FREE.

March 3-5: Winter Bluegrass Weekend | Varies The Winter Bluegrass Weekend: A Festival of Bluegrass & Old-Time Music & Dance is 3 incredible days packed with band showcases, headline concerts, dances, workshops, instrument exhibitors, and plenty of around the clock informal jam sessions. It all takes place in a comfortable, indoor setting at the beautiful Crowne Plaza Minneapolis West in Plymouth, MN.

March 4: Snakes Alive! | 1:30-2:30pm Meet a live western hognose snake, boa constrictor, egg-eating snake, and lots of other visiting snakes from ‘Snake Discovery’! You’ll get to see them up close, touch, hold, and even feed some of the program snakes! Snakes play an important role in the ecosystem; discover how to help them, so they can help us.

March 4: Brazil Fest @ Cedar Cultural Center | 8pm Carnaval Brasilerio is fun for the whole family with live music/dancing, free face and body painting, multiple performance groups, and mask and instrument making workshops. 

March 4: Free First Saturday: Kids’ Film Festival | 10am-3pm Spend the day watching family films at the Walker Art Center from around the world that celebrate the small things—the adventures and silliness of life. FREE.

March 5: Rock the Cradle presents Lisa Loeb | 11am-5pm The Current and Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota present award-winning singer-songwriter Lisa Loeb Official at The Fitzgerald Theater for a family-friendly concert. Loeb will perform her critically acclaimed children’s music at this special morning-time concert. 

March 12: Winter Days @ Savage | 1-4pm Join Savage Parks and Recreation for outdoor activities available at the McColl Pond Environmental Learning and Event Center (ELC) every other Sunday during the winter months. This a free family fun event. Enjoy snowshoeing, ice skating on McColl Pond, a campfire, s’mores, hot chocolate and treats. All ages are welcome; no registration is required for this event.


March 17: Saint Patrick’s Day Celebration at the Landmark Center | 10am-5pm Take in all things Irish at tow events that are not to be missed. Lively Celtic music, dancing, and authentic vendors will be featured over two days. The events are produced by the Irish Music and Dance Association, and hosted by Minnesota Landmarks. 

March 18: Sap Into Syrup Family Event | 2-3:30pm Carry the sap from roots to buds on our ‘maple tree’. Get acquainted with the tools and equipment and help tap a real tree. Do a taste test to compare maple sap, imitation, and real maple syrup. $5/child.

March 18-19: Irish Heritage Weekend at the James J. Hill House | Varies Theme tours will include favorite Irish songs, organ music and needlework demonstrations. Stories of the Hills and their servants (many of them Irish) will engage visitors in the history of Irish-Americans in Minnesota.

March 19: An Irish Day of Dance at the Landmark Center | 11am-5pm Take in all things Irish at tow events that are not to be missed. Lively Celtic music, dancing, and authentic vendors will be featured over two days. The events are produced by the Irish Music and Dance Association, and hosted by Minnesota Landmarks. 

March 19: Maple Syrup Festival | 2-4pm Come and celebrate spring! Learn about the tradition of gathering maple sap and cooking it down to make maple syrup and sugar. We’ll go through the syrup process, do some maple crafts, participate in a spring scavenger hunt, and taste some maple-y treats. Fun for the whole family! Pre-registration is required.

March 25: Maple Syrup Festival @ French Regional Park | 10am-1pm Tap a tree, collect sap, and watch it boil down. Sample the parks’ natural sweetness with pancakes! Drop in anytime. 

March 25: Elf and Fairy Houses @ Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park | 9am-12pm There’s magic along the river. Search for elf and fairy homes. Create your own house to take home.

March 25: Maple Syrup Festival and Pancake Brunch @ Lowry Nature Center | 10am-1pm Identify a sugar maple without leaves, tap a tree, collect and taste sap, and learn about the syruping process. Brunch from B’s on the River includes pancakes, sausage and fruit and is served with syrup made at Lowry Nature Center. Children 17 years and younger must be accompanied by a registered adult. Reservations required by March 20. $10; children under 2 free.

March 26: Free Family Fun Days: Wacky Weather @ Richardson Nature Center | 3-4pm Explore through hands-on activities at your own pace. Children 17 years and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Drop in anytime. 

March 26: Owl Story Hour @ Lowry Nature Center | 3:30-4:30pm Visit owl activity stations, listen to a story, and meet a captive barred owl up close.

Minnesota Zoo Tropical Beach Party February 18-March 12 | It’s all about the sand!  Bring the whole family to a winter get away at the Zoo.  We’ll supply the sand, palm trees, exotic animals and more. New this year will be the addition of a second sandbox in Discovery Bay! BYOP (Bring your own pail) or favorite sandbox toy!

Three Rivers Park District: FREE Family Fun Days: Sundays | Various Times Three Rivers offers family fun at Kroening Interpretive Center or Richardson Nature Center. Discover all the fun that life in and around the river and woods has to offer. FREE.

Toddler Tuesdays at MOA Tuesdays | 10am-Noon Toddler Tuesdays is a program that provides events, free entertainment and discounts especially for toddlers. Events include special character appearances, arts and crafts, story time and much more! FREE.

Wee Wednesdays at Midtown Global Market Wednesdays | 10:30am-1pm Wee Wednesdays showcase free educational programming, fun crafts and great meal deals each Wednesday morning at Midtown Global Market!
 Dance with them, experience live puppet theater, learn to cook fun items together in the kitchen, and even pet live animals from the Como Zoo. FREE.

Kids at the Castle: Third Friday Playdates (American Swedish Institute) In the hour before the museum opens, join ASI for visual play, storytelling, music, movement and crafts inspired by ASI’s current exhibits- activities that will encourage creative minds and active hands. Recommended for ages 2-5. $5 per family. Registration not required; check in at the Information Desk by 11 a.m. on the day of the program. Adult accompaniment required.
