There’s always something to do in the Twin Cities. This is an areas where events are never in shortage. We’ve heard over and over that our local guides are a huge help to you in keeping your kids busy and entertained (thus, you keep your sanity). In 2016, we’ll be bringing you monthly event guides so you don’t miss a thing! This is month #2, again with no shortage of activities!  We’ll update with new additions as they come.

February 2: Mall of America Toddler Tuesday: Michelle Nelson-Schmidt and the Whatif Monster | 10 & 11am at the Rotunda  Michelle presents an energetic, enthusiastic talk filled with childhood stories, vibrant artwork and readings of her books. Kids of all ages and children-at-heart will enjoy sharing a bit of what she likes to call her magical life. FREE.

February 4: Como Zoo Lil’ Explorer Thursdays: Animals in Winter | 10am-Noon FREE program from 10:00AM-noon each Thursday from September through April. Perfect for the 1-3 year old to meet animal and plant visitors, see story time, play games and many other fun activities. Different theme each week! FREE.

February 5: Forever Wild Family Friday: Musica, Lenhua, y Cultura! | 7-8:30pm Join us for family fun on the first Friday of every month. Join Leo and Kathy Lara as they present legends of the armadillo shaped charango, simulate sounds of the rainforest and more. All ages. FREE.

February 5: Wayzata Chilly Open: Cinema & Skate | 6-9pm All are welcome to experience an evening on Frozen Wayzata Bay. Bring your skates and glide under the stars on a luminary lit Wayzata Bay while enjoying hot cocoa and treats. Skating isn’t your thing? Step in to the heated ‘19th Hole’ hospitality tent and watch The Incredibles on a jumbo screen. Don’t forget your costume! FREE.

February 5-6: Xcel Energy Center: World’s Toughest Rodeo | 7:30pm World’s Toughest Rodeo showcases champion cowboys from around the United States competing in bareback riding, saddle bronc riding or bull riding, while the ladies will be vying for the championship title in barrel racing. Tickets start at $18 for adults and $10.25 for kids 12 and under.

February 6: TC Kids Fieldhouse Fun Run | 9am Join us for the TC Kids Fieldhouse Fun Run, held at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse in Minneapolis. Races are held on the same 200 meter track in which the U of M athletes practice! For the run, kids are grouped by age and then number of laps and invited to run around the track. $10.

February 6: Minnesota Historical Society: STEM Family Day | 11am-3pm History and science come together in a day of activities focusing on the role of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) in the past and present of the Minneapolis riverfront. Families can learn about kitchen chemistry in a Baking Lab demonstration; discover how simple machines helped the Washburn A Mill operate and design a solution to a mill problem using K’nex. $12 adults, $6 ages 5-17, 4 and under free.

February 6: MYSL: SuperCarnival | 2-5pm Ski games for the whole family – but designed especially for children 12 and under. Prizes! Relays! Obstacle Course! All with your skis on! Kids of all ages are welcome. FREE.

February 6: Apple Valley: Mid-Winter Fest | 9am-2pm TONS of activities to do with the whole family–face-painting, balloon animals, inflatable jumpers, KIDSDANCE DJ, and so much more! Admission is FREE.

February 7 & 21: Winter Fun Days by Savage Parks & Rec | 1-4pm Activities include snowshoeing, ice skating, a campfire with s’mores and hot chocolate. Come for the outside fun or have hot chocolate and play board games. FREE.

February 9: Mall of America Toddler Tuesdays: Chinese New Year Celebration | 10 & 11am at the Rotunda  Ring in the Year of the Monkey, view the Kai-lan “Happy Chinese New Year!” episode and make a festive craft at Toddler Tuesday! FREE.

February 11: Como Zoo Lil’ Explorer Thursdays: Furry Friends | 10am-Noon FREE program from 10:00AM-noon each Thursday from September through April. Perfect for the 1-3 year old to meet animal and plant visitors, see story time, play games and many other fun activities. Different theme each week! FREE.

February 13: Brazil Fest @ International Market Square | 3-6pm Carnaval Brasilerio is fun for the whole family with live music/dancing, free face and body painting, multiple performance groups, and mask and instrument making workshops. Free parking. Tickets are $10 advanced, $15 at the door.

February 13: Minnesota Historical Society: Be My Valentine Family Day | Noon-4pm Valentine’s Day is celebrated around the world in many different ways. In the United States, lovers send cards, chocolates and flowers; in Denmark admirers send “joke letters”; in Germany the pig is a symbol to mark the day; and in China young women carve fruits into exotic flowers, animals or unusual birds. Bring your favorite squeeze or little love bug and learn some surprising customs about romance from around the world. $12 adults, $6 ages 5-17, 4 and under free.

February 14: 365 Family Day 2016 | Noon-5pm Enjoy a fun afternoon of music, games and fun! Come check out magicians, a DJ, a local kids band, some princesses, some super heroes, balloon twisters, photo stations and face painters. $10 early bird tickets. $13 starting Feb. 1. $16 at the door. Kids 2 and under are free.

February 16: Mall of America Toddler Tuesdays: Pros of the Rope, LLC | 10 & 11am at the Rotunda  Join Pros of the Rope (POTR) for a morning of fun fitness activities just for youth! The activities will include:  double dutch jump rope, quick ladder drills, basic calisthenics and other energy releasing activities that improve footwork, coordination and confidence of every child. Kids will receive a special prize for participating in the challenge. FREE.

February 18: Como Zoo Lil’ Explorer Thursdays: Down on the Farm | 10am-Noon FREE program from 10:00AM-noon each Thursday from September through April. Perfect for the 1-3 year old to meet animal and plant visitors, see story time, play games and many other fun activities. Different theme each week! FREE.

February 23: Mall of America Toddler Tuesdays: AndyRoo and the AndyRooniverse | 10am at the Rotunda  Join AndyRoo on a musical journey to the AndyRooniverse — a magical town created by the ever-expanding landscape of children’s imaginations, where you’ll encounter swinging monkeys, Silly Sal the Salamander, and a big balloon that will whisk you away to a whole universe of exciting animated characters! FREE. 

February 24-28: Disney on Ice: Let’s Celebrate! | Various Times It’s one colossal party on ice, with all your favorite Disney friends! Join your favorite Disney characters as they celebrate a magical medley of holidays, celebrations and festivities from around the globe. Ticket prices $15.50-$72.50.

February 25: Como Zoo Lil’ Explorer Thursdays: Diggin’ Dinos | 10am-Noon FREE program from 10:00AM-noon each Thursday from September through April. Perfect for the 1-3 year old to meet animal and plant visitors, see story time, play games and many other fun activities. Different theme each week! FREE.

February 27: The Works Museum: Tech Fest 2016 | Hours on website The Works Museum’s annual celebration of National Engineers week. Tech Fest includes live demos by scientists and engineers, hand-on projects, family activities, and more! Admission is $8, 2 years and under free.

Ongoing Activities in February:

Three Rivers Park District: FREE Family Fun Days: Sundays | Various Times Three Rivers offers family fun at Kroening Interpretive Center or Richardson Nature Center. Discover all the fun that life in and around the river and woods has to offer. FREE.

Ice Castle (Eden Prairie): Open through March 7th | Schedule: M–Th: 3pm to 9pm | Friday: 3pm to 11pm | Sat: Noon to 11pm | Sun: Closed

Wells Fargo Winter Skate (St. Paul): Open through February 7th | Schedule: M-Th: 11am-5pm.  Fri-Sat: 11am-10pm |  Sun: 11am-8pm
Enjoy a fun winter outing in downtown St. Paul!  Skate rental is $4 per person. Show your Wells Fargo check card or credit card and get free skate rentals. Both hockey and figure skates are available from little tyke one-size-fits-all up to adults’ size 13.

Third Thursdays at Minneapolis Institute of Arts: 3rd Thursdays | 6pm  Experience MIA’s diverse art collection through unique programs, drinks, and live music.

Kids at the Castle: Third Friday Playdates (American Swedish Institute)  In the hour before the museum opens, join ASI for visual play, storytelling, music, movement and crafts inspired by ASI’s current exhibits- activities that will encourage creative minds and active hands. Recommended for ages 2-5. $5 per family. Registration not required; check in at the Information Desk by 11 a.m. on the day of the program. Adult accompaniment required.

Night Trains at Twin Cities Railroad Museum (Bandana Square – St. Paul): Saturdays through February 27th | 6-9pm Night Trains Season comes to the dozens of model railroad layouts in a magical way, the lights are turned down, the buildings and street lights glow warmly, setting the scene for specially lighted models of vintage passenger trains. The make believe town of Matlin is buried in a blizzard, and throughout the Museum the layouts are adorned with miniature Christmas lights and decorations. $10 for individuals, 4 and under FREE.

Ice Skating at Centennial Lakes: M-F 10am-9:30pm | Saturdays Noon-9:30pm | Sundays and most school holidays. vary.   Complementing the rink is a cozy, rink-side warming house, complete with indoor and outdoor fireplaces, restrooms, concessions and skate rental. Concession items include hot chocolate, pop, popcorn, hot dogs, chips and candy. Skate rental is available for $6 per pair, with sizes ranging from children’s Size 8 up to adult Size 13. Ice sleds may also be rented for $7 per hour. There is no admission charge for skating. Concessions stand and skate rental hours are 4 to 9:30 p.m.  Rink opens at Noon for those with their own skates.

Bear Snores On: Show Times Vary | Through February 15 Warm-up this winter as Bear and all his friends cozy up in our imaginative new musical! On a cold, stormy winter night, one by one, a whole host of animals venture into Bear’s cave to warm up. But even after the tea has been brewed and the corn has been popped, Bear just snores on! Come see what happens when he finally wakes up and finds them having a party! Also featured during Mall of America’s Toddler Tuesdays on January 22nd.

St. Paul Winter Carnival | Through February 7  The 130-year-old tradition has been the “Coolest Celebration on Earth™” since 1886.  Enjoy activities starting in January and running through February 7th: parades, a winter run, the snow park, ice carvings and so much more.  Plenty of fun activities throughout the festival to keep you busy!
